Style icons can pop up in the most unexpected places. In this case, I found one in AMC's tv series, Preacher. Preacher, originally a comic book published by Vertigo, an imprint of DC Comics, is about a preacher in Annville, Texas who is possessed by a supernatural creature and the trials and tribulations that ensue. Season one was funny, dramatic, sometimes absurd and definitely delivered. Preacher's unique plot was played out by a captivating cast but main character Jesse Custer's ex-girlfriend played by Ruth Negga, Priscilla-Jean Henrietta O'Hare – Tulip for short – steals the screen not only with her fiery Texas commentary but especially with her attire.
Karyn Wagner, the costume designer for the show (with the exception of the pilot episode in which the costume designer was Laura Jean Shannon), morphs the actors into character with her eclectic and on-point choices for their respective personas. Tulip's character in particular showcases Wagner's curatorial eye and ability to complete a character through costuming. Tulip teeters between tough and feminine throughout the season, a dance Wagner captures effortlessly with an array of monochromatic color palettes and both high and low wardrobe pieces. I look forward to seeing what Wagner dreams up in season 2!
