I'm always into seeing how people put together their work so in turn I thought I would share my process. My approach varies sometimes but this is generally how it goes.
It begins with a request from the client. In this example, Philip Brown of PERC Coffee requested a social media image. First I'll nail down my size and content. Sometimes it is client supplied and sometimes I have wiggle room to reword something. In this case I had the option to play around with the wording.
Once I have my size and content figured out I begin sketching layouts.
Refine, refine, refine.
Once I feel like I have explored a number of options I'll select which sketch to finalize. This is the one! I'll sketch it out on copy paper bigger so I can work in details.
I feel good about the composition. Next I'll add more details and add some fun parts.
Feeling good about where I'm headed. Time for pen! For this version I used a micron. The copy paper is see through so unless I am working on some really fine detail I don't use a lightbox.
I scan the piece and live trace it in Adobe Illustrator. Here is where I select colors and make adjustments.
The final touch is adding texture in Adobe Photoshop.
Finished! Depending on the project I'll work up several options but I've worked with this client for a while and had a good idea about what to deliver. Here's an animation of the whole process start to finish.
